A is for Activist. This was the only book I bought for him before he was born to add to the collection of many books he was gifted by others. I was hopeful. I am hopeful.
Activist: someone who's actively involved in social change.
The world can always become a better place. The world needs to become a better place. For our children. For us. For other people's children.
On this inauguration day, I recommit to doing my best to raise my children into thoughtful, compassionate, aware global citizens. I recommit to using my gifts to make a positive impact. I recommit to educating myself and learning the stories of others. I recommit to being kind, because although it sounds futile, I have to believe that kindness can do a lot to make the world better, too.
And I will be an activist.
This is one of Everett's favorite books, not because of the content, but because there is a cat on every page that he gets to find, but I hope that as we read it and he excitedly looks for the cat, the message is seeping in too. We are for others. We are for peace and justice, human rights, LGBTQ rights, women's rights, immigrants, people of color, and people with disabilities. We are for people.
And tomorrow, to show our support, we will march.
