Arequipa Es Bonita

After Huacachina, we took an overnight bus to Arequipa, where we are as of today. It is a charming little city. I don't know how better to describe it- it has charmed me.

One of the most beautiful parts of this city is a convent that is like a little city within itself. It literally takes up a whole block. The Convento de Santa Catalina was founded in the 1500s and was a convent for upper class Spanish girls to come to who could afford a pricey dowry. Although each nun took a vow of poverty and chastity, the girls were able to maintain their upper class lifestyle by keeping slaves and partying it up in the convent. This went on for about 300 years until the Pope found out and put an immediate stop to it. Part of it still functions as a convent today, but the majority has been restored for tourism.

And just to live up to my reputation of creating way too long of blog posts and because if you are still reading this, that means I love you and want to meet your deepest curiosities about convents in Peru, I present to you a series of pictures I like to call "Crapping in a Convent":

This next picture actually says "The New Slipper Bed Pan" and in fine print goes into detail about how the flannel cup is more comfortable. Good to know, right? And Matt took this next picture especially for Jason Evans, our property-mate. It is stenciled on a building and says, "Buy art."
Finally, the end.
